How to Brew Coffee Without a Coffee Maker
A pot, a percolator, a moka pot or just a mug — good coffee with no machine.
Cold Brew GuideThe machine broke, the power is out, you are camping, or you never owned one. Here is how to brew coffee without a coffee maker using equipment most kitchens already have — plus the classic stovetop brewers, the percolator and the moka pot.
How to Brew Coffee in a Pot (Saucepan Method)
This is the simplest method of all, sometimes called cowboy coffee.
- Bring water to a boil in a saucepan, then take it off the heat for about 30 seconds.
- Stir in coarsely ground coffee, roughly 1–2 tablespoons per 6 ounces of water.
- Cover and let it steep for about 4 minutes, stirring once halfway.
- Let the grounds settle for a minute; a splash of cold water can help them sink.
- Ladle or pour slowly into cups, leaving the grounds behind, or pour through a strainer.
Stovetop Percolator
A percolator pushes boiling water up a tube and over a basket of grounds again and again. It makes hot, strong coffee and has a loyal following, especially for camping.
- Fill the pot with water to the level you need.
- Add coarse grounds to the basket.
- Heat on medium until you see the coffee start to bubble up into the glass knob, then lower the heat.
- Perk gently for a few minutes, then take it off the heat and remove the basket before serving.
Keep the heat moderate and the time short. Over-perking is the main cause of bitter percolator coffee.

Moka Pot
A moka pot uses steam pressure to push water up through a fine bed of coffee, producing a strong, concentrated brew.
- Fill the bottom chamber with hot water up to just below the safety valve.
- Fill the basket with fine-ground coffee and level it without packing it down.
- Screw the pot together firmly and set it on medium heat with the lid open.
- When coffee starts flowing into the top, lower the heat. Take it off as soon as it begins to sputter.
- Cool the base under a cold tap to stop the brewing, then pour.

How to Brew Coffee Without a Filter
Cup steep
Put grounds in a mug, add hot water, steep about 4 minutes, then let it settle and sip carefully, or pour through a sieve.
Homemade coffee bag
Tie grounds in a paper filter or clean cloth with string and steep it like a tea bag.
Makeshift strainer
A fine sieve lined with a clean cloth or paper towel can stand in for a filter in a pinch.
Use a press or moka pot
Both have built-in metal filters, so no paper is needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make coffee without a filter?
Yes. Settle the grounds in the pot and pour carefully (the saucepan method), or strain through a fine sieve, a clean cloth or a paper towel as a last resort. A French press or moka pot needs no paper filter at all.
Is percolator coffee bad?
Not bad, but easy to overdo. Because a percolator cycles brewed coffee back over the grounds, long or hot brewing makes it bitter. Use a coarse grind, keep the heat moderate and stop after a few minutes of perking.
Can I make coffee in the microwave?
You can heat water in a microwave and then steep grounds in it, as in the cup method below. Heat water carefully in a microwave-safe container, as superheated water can boil over suddenly.
Brew Ahead Instead
Cold brew needs no heat and no machine: just coarse grounds, water and time.
